AADL Talks To Commander Cody
George Frayne, aka Commander Cody, formed Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen in 1967 while attending the University of Michigan. We had the opportunity to chat with George backstage at the Ark before the 40th anniversary of the John Sinclair Freedom Rally (Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen performed at the original Rally in 1971). George spoke about the formation of the band, his memories of some of Ann Arbor's musical hot spots, as well as his introduction to boogie-woogie piano, to pot, and to John Sinclair and the White Panther Party.
AADL Talks To: John Sinclair (March 22, 2010)
In this interview from March 22, 2010, poet, author, and activist John Sinclair reflects on music in Ann Arbor - from the MC5, the free concerts in the parks and the Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz festival, to his specific memories of local clubs and musicians. He also talks about the influence of both the Beat generation and black music on his cultural and political awakening, the origins of the White Panther Party, and the importance of newspapers.

Bill Kirchen sings into the microphone just behind Miller. Steve Elliott plays the drums at left. Dan Chesluk is playing the electric organ at center. The concerts are well attended, with hundreds of persons showing up last Sunday. Many city residents have joined the crowds--some to satisfy their curiousity.
